Franco was a primary reason I became a Steelers fan as a five yr old in 1976 in Roanoke, VA.

I wore #32 when I played youth football and tried to emulate his style of play. Most in Roanoke were Washington or Dallas fans but I loved Franco and the Steelers. He gave me so many great memories and was my childhood sports hero.

Steeler Nation and the entire NFL lost a great one, today. And from I’ve read and heard, he was a great man off the field, too as he was selfless who gave back to the community.

    for the family.

Got to meet and speak with Franco on a couple occasions. The guy was never to big to converse with a regular fan. Such a sad day.

RIP, Franco Harris, my first and #1 sports hero as a kid, I liked Joe Greene and became a Steelers fan because of him, but in 1972, as a 10 year old, I wanted to read every story I could about Franco. Then when the play happened, my fandom for Franco was sealed for life. The one memory I want to share was the SBXIII play where he felt the Cowboys gave a cheat shot on the previous play. Franco told Bradshaw to give him the damn ball and Franco ran for a 22-yard TD.

My thoughts are all over on this due to the timing. Was there some indication that Franco was in poor health and the organization decided they needed to retire his jersey on the 50th anniversary? Why didn't they do this on the 40th anniversary or earlier, which in retrospect, would have obviously been better. Did they have to wait a half a century? I'm pissed, sorry but Franco deserved to be at this event and the Steelers took too long to make it happen. Not holding anything against anyone or the organization, it's just a tragic and unfortunate coincidence if this was truly unexpected. JMO>

Sad day. Always admired Franco's style of just handing the ball to the ref and when walking away from a tackle, always looked like he was limping bit so the tackler could not tell if he hurt him. But more impressive was his dedication to Pittsburgh over the decades. Truly a class act that I wish more youngsters would emulate.

    He will be missed.

Such devastating news and the epitome of sad irony with the upcoming Saturday night festivities. The fact that the IR was still voted THE TOP NFL Play of All Time as recent as 2 years ago speaks volumes about how remarkable this play was not just to Steeler fans but the game of football itself. The fact that it was Franco, a wonderful caring person who carried out the miracle, was so absolutely fitting. The news was similar to how many of us felt just 8 days later in 1972 when Roberto's plane went down serving humanity. I was so looking forward to seeing him being honored this Saturday. So unspeakably sad.

Apparently Tom Morello of RATM was a big fan.

Reminds me of the day Willie "Pops" Stargell died on the opening day of PNC Park where they were going to unveil his 12 foot bronze statue.
