And we were on pace for 40. The offense collapsed and left the defense hung out to dry

Remember what Troy use to say, this defense wasn't designed to stay on field for long periods of time. Those 3 and outs kill defenses
    especially ones with suspect depth.

Please, just stop. The offense put up 30 points and lost. This was on the defense.

I don't remember Polamalu making excuses like that. I'm disappointed in him if he really said it.

True but nobody was close to covering the receivers, not impressed with our defensive schemes like Sutton giving 10 yard cushions, no help from safeties on covering their top receiver, and all year especially when Watt was out, we cannot come up with better blitz package to help the pass rush. Austin and Tomlin not very creative with the defense. We were better schemed when we had our old DC come up with Hilton and others blitzing, we don't see that now at all.

Being on the field so much might be an excuse for pass rush late in the game but they really weren't able to get Burrow often enough, even in the first half. Time on the field also isn't an excuse for breakdowns in coverage against Higgins and Perine throughout the game, as well as poor tackling. There's enough blame to go around so why is it so hard for people to admit that both sides of the ball didn't do enough to win?

Both sides could have done more, but I lean more toward the defense. That is the veteran unit, the supposed strength of the team, and they were terrible. For all its flaws, the offense put up 30 points. Time of possession isn't just a function of the offense. It is the defense being unable to get a stop on third down.

losing Cole hurt us, but I also think losing Warren as our 3rd down back hurt too.

To be fair any Offensive holding call on those 90 yard drives probably stalls them. Just saying there were plenty to call. But go ahead and call Pat for a ticktack one in good field position

If the offense could sustain a few drives, the defense wouldn’t be on the field long enough to allow 37. Both sides of the ball need work.

Agreed. The combination of Harris and Warren was huge against the Saints and Warren did make a nice play to convert a third down against the Bengals, too.

They do, but the offense was sustaining drives in the first half and the Bengals still managed 17 points, which had them on pace for 34 points.

He said it about the offense scoring way too fast, but yes He did basically say that.

Basically, big problems on both side of the ball and with OC/DC/HC. This is NOT going to be a quick fix. I hope the GM does his best to maximize assets and trade shrewdly. Since one or two players aren't going to fix this for 2023, given the bad OL, the aging DL, lack of ILB and so-so DB play, I hope he finds a way to trade back 3 to 6 spots in the draft and add an extra 2nd and/or 3rd round pick or a 2024 first. We need extra day 1/2 picks next two years. Short of that we have to nearly ace the round 1, round 2 draft picks AND hit on 50% of FA signings, to be a playoff contender. Right now, we're a bad team, helped only by playing the four teams in NFC's worst division. We're a bad 3-7 team, probably should be 2-8 or 1-9.

Ha! With that logic, one could also say that the Steelers lost because they didn't score 38 points on offense (or total)!

With a good defense 30 points on offense should be more than enough to secure a victory.

The Steelers have the highest paid defense in the NFL and giving up 37 points is a great failure on their behalf. They gave up 3 passing TD's to a backup running back and another one to a guy who was on the practice squad 2 weeks ago. One of those TD's was a 29 yard scamper off of a screen pass completely untouched all the way to the end zone. Talk about being embarrassed. We really only had two players on defense playing passionately on Sunday and they are the usual go getters. TJ and Cam. The rest of the defense was lost in confusion most of the time. All of this though comes down to coaching. The Bengals were better prepared and more disciplined. That's nothing new to some of us Steelers fans. We've seen it for over a decade now and counting.

Bottom line, overall, the cost of this defense can't be justified.

Actually all 3 Perrine TD's were thrown behind the LOS! That's the more Damning part of it! They're allowing massive YAC to guys that are back-ups and PS guys!

Preaching to the choir my friend! I have posted several times citing many of the issues on defense. Being the "highest paid defense" is mainly due to TJ! Love 'em! Great player! But this is not working out, obviously. I have even suggested the idea of trading TJ at the end of the season, so we can get the max from him and free up a LOT of salary cap space. Of course, many people don't see any logic there and they think things are going great (big smile)! The biggest problem with this defense is that it is technically flawed. You can't play a "bump and run" look, in man or zone (mainly C2) without, what we call, a reroute (in the football world). A reroute, is basically where the DB physically (with bump technique or a "punch") throw off the receivers timing and "reroute" them typically inside (to your help- Safeties/LBs). Man coverage, you generally want to be on the inside hip of the receiver, so you reroute them outside! And generally, you try and drive them OOB immediately (within the first few yards). If you watch the; Miami, KC or the last Cincy game, they all did great film work and completely took advantage of DBs playing up (bump/run) with no reroutes. So it's pretty much a free release and a fade throw (timing). Even in the KC game, the Steelers couldn't stop them with C2 Man (Safeties over, Man under). Without an immediate pass rush, you will get beat EVERYTIME, without reroutes in Bump Man or C2! Fact!!

You're right! It's a waiting game now! The staff really needs to go. They are complacent and are running the team into the ground. No coach just "forgets" how to coach. But some do get complacent (as Tomlin has) and get lazy with details! Small things, are ALL things, in coaching.

The Steelers are #1 in money spent on the Defense, spending 48.8% of the cap on it.
As we've seen, the DB's are not reflecting that value.

The offense wants to operate effectively and ideally own time of possession, but they can also be quick strike (KC)

Time Of Possession can help a Defense but scoring is even better.
When you force the other offense to keep up, they make mistakes.
But when we finally gained momentum, the Defense let the Bengals drive it right down their throats.

This Defense needs to be rebuilt to stop the run (they've been terrible) and keep pressure on the QB in the passing phase.
The Offense, which is moving towards this, needs to put scores up.

Like normal tactics, take what is given until someone stops you. That's the problem, no one adjusted to stop them. JMO>
