Pickett wont develop under Canada or Tomlin, I understand Tomlin is the HMFIC, but he should not allow this BS offense to continue and Canada should be shown the door. After that, hire an offensive staff and let them do what they do! Interfering with all aspects and micro managing his staff shows a complete lack of trust or a complete sign of insecurity.

While Johnson has some responsibility, I think it mostly scheme and QB play.

    From stats at Football Reference:

Player, Target %, Drop % (Drops), Rating [QB rating when targeting receiver]

    Johnson: 24.6%, 3.5% (3), 49.4%
    Pickens: 15.1%, 1.9% (1), 102.2%
    Frieirmuth: 19.1%, 4.5% (3), 79.3%

    D. Adams: 32.2%, 4.5% (5), 110..2%
    S. Diggs: 28.9%, 2.9% (3), 130.0%
    C. Lamb: 30.5%, 4.3% (4), 92.2%
    D. Metcalf: 25.0%, 7.8% (6), 97.4%

    IDK

I look at your stats and think with Harris DJ wouldn’t even be one of my top 3 receivers

And he should be running a route that actually is past the first down marker

He runs the route, then runs backwards after he catches the ball. He started doing it last year and now seems to do it every time. I don't know if they're designed curls but it's irritating as hell.

Not sure I understand. Harris has a 10% target share, 5.7% drop rate (2 drops), and QBs have a 102.1% rating when targeting him.

The stat I think telling is the QBR. While a bit of an interpretive stat, it factors out the drops and tries to account for the accuracy of the balls thrown that receiver's way - whether off-line or defended. Trubisky showed a hesitancy to throw over middle, where a good amount of Johnson's routes cross and slant, and Pickett has at times as well. This decreases his target share a bit (24.9% vs. 25.9% LY), and raises the question of why passes his way aren't getting through.

If it were me and I had doubts with DJ I'd be shifting a larger chunk the target share to the other three. But while Freiermuth has significantly increased thus far over 2021 (19.1% vs. 12.1%), Harris (10.1% vs. 14.4%) and Pickens (15.1% vs. 16.1% for Claypool) are down, meaning some of Muth's increase is poaching from them as well. Notable, too, is Johnson's QBR when targeted in 2021 was a 91.9%.

I don't think there's a holy grail stat here, but I think they at least suggest that something else is in play. I don't think Johnson's an elite WR1, but solid enough, especially if flanked by a Pickens with a Freiermuth at TE and Harris out of the backfield. So for me it comes back to Canada not properly tying those pieces into his game plan. Yeah, they've got a rookie at QB (and WR2), but I think there's more talent across the unit than what's been tapped with his scheme.

Freiermuth leads the team in receiving yardage, and that's with him missing a game.

Maybe he should run some routes besides five yard out patterns

DJ does that. Unfortunately he runs backwards after the catch and somehow makes an automatic first down into a 3rd and 2

I hate his freaking gestures after a bad pass when the ball is not where it was supposed to be; trying to make sure everyone knows it wasn't his fault he didn't catch the ball.

I don't ever remember seeing DJ do this before this year.

Makes sense. Pickens is best WR on team, TE is key with a rookie and Murth has good hands, and since Olzewski is not in the return game, get him involved in the passing game. NE rarely threw through him the ball, but the few couple they did each season, he average over 10 yards a catch. He did the same thing in last game. Steelers are paying him to seat, get him involved, see what he has. He played defense back in college.

I'm not saying he's Julian Edelman, who played QB in college. But maybe he knows how to quickly separate from the DB as he used to play one. Worst case, he's back riding the pine.

    (From PFR, through 11 weeks)

Seems Johnson gets the most targets—but note that this isn’t normalized for snap counts.

    DJ’s QBR is disturbing.
