We’ve tried this for years. Steelers are cheap. Scooping up teams scraps for cheap and it rarely works. Too many holes to fill in FA.

Half a season of tanking doesn’t turn us into the Browns. It’s needed.

Every year every NFL fanbase talks about how good they would’ve been if no injuries. Injuries happen and part of the game. You need depth in this league. We’ve seen a lot of our depth this year and it’s not good. Watt doesn’t play and defense is terrible. Heyward is getting old and a lot of miles with no replacement. We don’t have a #1 corner. Are we going to pay Edmunds??? Then the obvious issues of LBs and OL.

If the Steelers are right up against the cap every year, how is that cheap?

Before jumping the conclusions you may want to see how much Leal and Malik Reed grow. They are young players with potential. I agree we could use one extra talented body in the D Line/OLB rotation but overall this is a solid unit. Secondary has come along, and if Kazee/Wallace/Maullet/Sutton stay healthy I think it's an above average group.

This team is going to be really, really bad for a few years. Cant say I agree with this

    1. We have no clue what we have with KP, but the early returns don’t look good. Hard to tell 5 games in. Some things have been great, some not so good. Very rare for a rookie to look like a top 10 QB 5 games into his rookie year.

    2. Maybe 1 starter on the offensive line doesn’t need to be replaced. TBH we need to replace the left side of the line. Cole has been fine (average NFL starter), Daniels has actually been pretty good, and Chuks is easily an above average starting RT. Moore has been bad and is best suited to be the swing tackle and Dotson has been fairly weak.

    3. Wideouts are ok. TE is ok. Our wideouts will depend on how good Pickens can be. Diontae is a good #1 but not elite. Pickens can be an AJ Green type guy. They compliment each other well. I think we are good here. Freiermuth is fantastic. He will never be Kelce, but if he can stay unconcussed, he will be a quality top 5-7 TE for a long time.

    4. RB’s are poor, but perhaps a really good oline would help them. Harris has been poor, but he can help himself out more here. Today was the first game he ran with conviction. I know they say he has been hurt, but it looked like he just ran differently today. More of that and he will be fine.

So, we need a minimum of 4 and potentially as many as 6 good starters on offense. Our offense will likely go as far as Pickett allows us. If we can pick up a good LT and potentially a LG, then its just up to KP. We are probably 2 starters short of a good offense (assuming the OC is replaced or suddenly becomes competent).

    1. Defensive line is old. In the next 2 years, we’ll need at least 2 starters. Yes old, but they are good. I would be fine with signing Ogunjobi for a few more years. Leal really looked great before his injury. Its definitely a position to look out for bc of Heyward's age, but I don't think we need 2 starters. Signing Ogunjobi and then letting Leal take over for Heyward after next season is a good plan for now.

    2. ILB and OLB - we need a new alpha, the Myles can become our weak ILBer. Must replace Spillane. Would love to see us target an ILB in FA. Tremaine Edmunds is due a contract and Buffalo will have a hard time affording him. Kwon Alexander wouldn't be awful either. Bush is as good as gone and we are pretty weak behind him.

    3. secondary - everyone but Minka needs to go. Cam could possibly stay, but he’d be the nickel back. Sutton is a good player. He is easily a solid #2. We absolutely need a good one to go on the other side of him. Maulet has been great and should easily stick around as nickel and solid depth. Edmunds is a good solid player on a low price tag. I wouldn't hate seeing him resigned as long as we move with Kazee too.

That means overall, we need 7 really good starters on D. I see it more like 3. We definitely will need to replace Heyward here shortly but as it stands for next year (without any signings) SS, ILB, and CB. We are in significantly worse shape if we re-sign neither Edmunds or Sutton. That would make us closer to 5.

That is 13 of 22 starters, including the hardest to replace, QB, to be a good team again. It is going to be YEARS before we don’t suck again. Get used to it. Hopefully we can build through the draft…. Somewhere between 5-7 starters away from a solid squad. It will obviously depend a ton on KP's development, but if he can just be an average NFL QB we should have a reasonably competitive team. We have a lot of money in FA and 3 picks somewhere in the first 45-50 picks. We are at least in a good spot. Just have to make it count. I dont envy Cleveland. They shipped 3 firsts and cap hell into a single player. If Watson doesnt single handedly save that team, they are devoid of talent and in cap hell. Rough spot to be.

I agree with 2, 3. No opinion yet on Pickett, way too early and way too poor an OL and OC to make any judgements on him. I do worry that it took him 5 years in college to actually be above average QB. He was 23 years old, quite old for first success. That said, many players were 22/23 lately due to covid and the extra year handed out, so it's not like he was the only 23 year old dominating 18/19/20 year olds. Still one season of success, at a time when he should have been out of college, is scary.

Nothing wrong with Najee, he is a top 10 RB, just not this year after the lisfranc and downgrade from Ben to Trubisky/Pickett/Canada. I think he'd be right back to last years play with full off season of conditioning and further away from that injury that tends to really linger in its after-effects.

I also agree DL is old and too many posters on here not considering that. When Cam hangs it up or starts declining rapidly (this might be his last good year), this DL will be worse than the OL (well Watt alone makes it decent, but he is just a DE/OLB, not a full DL). Our trenches are AWFUL. A good part of that is laid at Kevin Colbert/Mike Tomlin feet. They simply ignored the OL and DL in the drafts the past 5+ years (Watt was last investment of merit). The occasional 3rd and 5th round pick won't cut it.

I like Najee, but there is little doubt that we needed to rebuild the OL and DL before going in on skill players like Najee and Pickett. Should have been drafting OL heavily two years ago when we were sticking with Ben and after Villanueva and Pouncy and Decastro moved on for various reasons. We acted like we were fine after those admittedly declining players were out.

We can be a normal (disappointing, but respectable) Mike Tomlin team next year if we get two or three of the worst starters off the field and those positions upgraded. Until Mike Tomlin is gone, I don't see us getting high ceiling OC/DC's and surely don't see another playoff win any time soon. We're (and have been for a decade) waaaaaaay too soft a team under Tomlin with no discipline and no accountability...for players or coaches.

My one glimmer of light? We have a new GM that hasn't had his own draft or off-season yet. I hope he turns out to be a saavy GM. If not, any dreams of super bowl runs are just dreams...reality of the past 10+ years under Tomlin clearly show that we need a GM that can overcome mediocre coaching, leadership, game planning and play calling on the sideline.

1st round pick needs to be a stud Left Tackle. I had hope for Moore after the 21 season but he has proven he is not the answer.

    Defensive line should be next.

Funny thing, I was talking with a beat guy for the Patriots this past Saturday (I've known him for ~30 years)
He was showing me a bunch of "Belichick sucks and must go" posts.

The Steelers are like most NFL teams, they need a few things.
The 'fixes' that they made didn't work out as well as most anybody would have thought.
Other 'fixes' need some time - Watching Kenny play, he is going to be a good QB unless his sophomore year goes really south.

I think Canada is in a rut, too predictable.
I'd like to see them tap into one of the up-and-coming guys off some staff - I do like the Buffalo staff, but there's a few staffs I wouldn't mind robbing.
In my opinion, just a move like that would improve the exact same offense.

I am still on the fence with Austin.
TJ adds so much to this team, the guy is a beast. He makes everyone better around him.

Personnel-wise, I agree with most, OT is #1 on the wish list.
They need to build along the line of scrimmage.

Just to emphasise how quickly things can change in the NFL, going in to the 2021 offseason the Eagles were in cap hell and had an ageing roster with no credible QB

Skip forward 18 months and they are the favourites to win the NFC and third favourites for the Super Bowl. A good draft and a few smart decisions can work wonders

The GM was super aggressive trading away good players for draft picks. Colbert never did this, even when it was obvious we didn't have a contender the past four years plus.
The GM was also aggressive in trading back or trading for future picks.

The Claypool trade gives me a glimmer of hope that our new GM will make those moves, even if unpopular, when clearly a rebuild via the draft is needed.

I wish we had the Philly GM, but we don't. I also wish we had the Philly HC, but we don't, we're stuck with Tomlin and under-performing and playoff duds (if/when we get back to the playoffs).

Andy Weidl was a key member of the Eagles front office at the time, specialising in the area of personnel, he is now assistant GM with the Steelers and is Khans right hand man by all accounts. I’m not suggesting that that’ll fix everything, just that he is a highly regarded professional and was part of the Eagles organisation at a time when they made some really good decisions.

But it shows how a seemingly hopeless situation can be turned around quite quickly, and why predictions of long term misery for the team are a bit short sighted.

Not only just Andy Weidl. The Philly FO has sprouted some serious branches from that FO Tree.

Joe Douglas, Andrew Berry and a couple others have left the Eagles and have had success elsewhere.

Explain to me how this team is supposed to tank, are they supposed to sit their good players, or tell their players to not try too hard to win :facepalm:. Fans pay hundreds of dollars for tickets, and some travel from out of town to come watch the Steelers, but you expect them to tank just to get a better draft pick .

Just as quickly look How J. Allen, and Buffalo went from being SB, and MVP favorites to being The Qb with the most turnovers in the league, and 3rd in their division as of right now.
All I'm saying is things can ,and will change quickly in the NFL.
