but can someone explain wtf is going on here?
Yes, it is just one play. And yes, I really don't know the intricacies of designing and drawing up plays.

But...this is from a 3rd down, late in the 3rd quarter. The pass was completed and they got a first down anyway, I believe to Pickens on the out.

But why are Muth and Claypool running identical hook routes from the opposite slot, ending up in the same spot of the field? KP has two identical check down options that will get the 1st down and nothing more. Why two of the same?

Why not send one, preferably Claypool, up the seam into the deeper middle of the field? Not only you have a deeper option, but that would draw 11s his defender away from Muth giving him a better chance of breaking one tackle for a bigger gain.

    Who TF drew this up?

    Exactly.
And people complain about short throws and not using the middle of the field. There are ZERO mof options here beyond a (two) check down(s).

Also, note the beau-tiful blitz pick up by Jaylen Warren.

Seriously, am I missing something? This design makes no sense. Someone make it make sense.
When I paused and replayed it, even my wife said 'why are they right next to each other?'

I was very stupid thinking after last season giving the benefit of the doubt to Matt Canada because I thought it wasn't his real offense and more about Ben's offense since he was too old at that point to learn a new system and that the biggest reason for our struggle in offense was because Ben was washed

But, it was not the case...This is possible Ben had more than that left in the tank but Canada made the entire offense and Ben way worse and it continues this year with other players in this unit

Granted we do not have Pat Mahomes, but can't we run a Pat Mahomes offense for our WR's?
I thought the NFL was a copy cat league?

It's not about being open, it's about using the field. They are essentially running that play with only 10 guys on offense. Look at all of that green. Not a white jersey anywhere inside the numbers and beyond 4 yards past the LOS. So easy to defend against when 2 guys are running outs and 2 are doing short curls. There's literally a big gaping hole of nothingness in the middle.

I can't remember this play. I recall one like this in the first half with Warren getting a really nice block like that.
This could actually be on the receivers if one or both are running an option route.
I would agree that typically, you want a seam to clear and bring that drag route across.
They could be flooding the zone too.
And I can't tell if someone is running the sidelines?

I am assuming this is zone since the defender has outside leverage on Claypool and the Safety is top middle. (over or single) it would seem Claypool should be on a corner route and maybe instead sat in the zone? I dunno.
But 2 In the same zone just brings more tacklers. So it appears to be a play gone awry.

I believe that is the play that had Collinsworth focused on Warren's blocking when they showed the replay.

Again, I understand what you are saying. But, on this particular play ... he has an open buffet to throw the pass.

Seeing that whole deep middle wide open and nothing drawn up to take advantage of it is absolutely maddening....
What's even worse is that I'm sure nothing will be done to make adjustments and take advantage of that if it's available again

Slot receiver routes are frequently dictated by the defenders leverage.

I see what you are saying, but it is just one play. You can't even see the whole field in the picture.

It looks like Claypool is doing a jig :lolol:

I was listening to Tomlins press conference today and I can't for the life of me believe that NO ONE asks him why the middle of the field isn't used more like there are land mines.

By any means necessary throw Canada out the door! Pathetic!

That's why Ben would go rogue. Canada should not be calling an NFL offense

I agree. Especially the people are criticizing the quarterbacks for dinking and dunking without understanding why.
