Oldest team in league to one of the youngest in 2 year span ? I think so

here is a list of guys who I think either

    A) have seen their better days

    B) are no longer worthy of the contract they hold

    C) are in the last year of their current deals and won't be back

    1) Hampton , age and loss of dominance at a pos FA status for 2013 I believe this could be his last Rodeo

    2) Mendy , contract is up at seasons end and his recent demotion he will be elsewhere in 2013

    3) Wallace , end of his rookie deal , turned down an offer by the Steelers for an extension , drop in productivity , effort , to many drops

    4) Mundy , has proved he is not worthy of a backup job on this team and he will be replaced because of it

    5) Pope , signed a 1 year deal and that will be the extent of his stay , David Johnson will return in 2013 and battle for the FB pos and like Will Johnson both have pos flexibility to also be the 3rd TE I think we keep 2 FBs in 2013

    6) Batch , his era has passed we need to get younger at the backup QB pos

    7 ) Leftwich , see Batch

From this point on it goes from without question they are gone to it could happen

    8) Troy- lets face it he is not getting any younger he will be 32 next year , his contract is not cheap and in the last 7 seasons he has logged 16 games just twice , the way he plays the game and his current age suggests his ability to stay healthy will continue to be an issue , can the Steelers afford that kind of cap hit for limited games played moving forward ?

    9) Will Allen he will stay if Troy goes but doubt they keep both considering they need room for youth and he will be 31 next season and a FA the play he put on tape this year will make him a more valuable FA

    10) Larry Foote final year of his deal and will be 33 next year they may keep him if they do not think Spence will be able to return to form

Lots of roster changes could be ahead for the 2013 version of the Pittsburgh Steelers who if I am correct will go from one of the oldest teams in the league to one of the youngest in just a 2 year time frame of Retooling
mind you this is only my opinion and your entitled to disagree if you so desire [IMG]

Troys 2013 cap hit is $10,387,500 way to much for a player who can not stay on the field
    Will Allen UFA

and these are lower round tenders on Dwyer and Sanders than I truly anticipate as we see them upping production and playing time at this point this season

    Greg Warren
    David Johnson
Larry Foote if they keep him

10 mil is too much for Troy, too much for Harrison and 7.6 mil for Colon is a crime.

Nice work on this post

Not sure Troy is going anywhere though, lot will depend on how he finishes this season, they can always restructure his deal to lessen the cap hit. If Dwyer can prove he can play a whole game without removing himself, then Mendy is as good as gone. Wallace actually may be here too since he is losing all leverage with his play this season.

Pretty much agree with everything else.

restructures always come back to bite you in the ass at a later date and is partly to blame for some of the mess we are in right now , dead money always leaves a mark ...

that being said we may rework some deal ( we almost have to )

some guys we simply can not afford to lose are UFA's this next off season ...

I want to keep Starks regardless of Adams and Gilberts development , neither have proved to be durable and you must have 3 able tackles on any roster if you want to succeed in this league

Foster is another guy who's ceiling is on the rise and has played off the charts compared to a year ago , even with Decasto coming back from injury you just never know when Colon goes down and Foster has some RT ability if necessary ... in my mind it is still not a given Decastro can beat him out at this point ( not the way Foster is improving ) and that would be a very nice problem to have to sort out moving forward !

Foote ... with Spences recovery a virtual unknown at this point it is fair to say they will want him back , its clear Sly is not going to be the answer he is a walking penalty in waiting

Lego is the starting C many teams wish they had , the kid is fantastic in his reads and holds up pretty well at the point of attack at Center , not so much at Guard but he can play decent enough there in spot duty if need be , I would hate to lose Lego because of his play at C when all world C Pouncey goes down ( and he does go down ) .....

just a few final thoughts that did not fit in the original post due to its enormous length

Yeah, they have restructured a ton already. Foote has done a nice job this year and I think has earned himself a spot next season. Shame what happened to Spence. Good stuff, welcome to the board.

    Good information, cheers dude.

I don't think David Johnson makes it back. Will Johnson has already outshone him in too many ways to even entertain the idea of him being back.
I will be interested to see if - and I'm not sure it's a given - Mendenhall goes, if they bring back Batch or draft a new prospect. I still don't see them giving up on a first round pick that easily, unless he's after silly money, or his demotion goes on longer that a game or two (which I don't think it will, unless Dwyer plays a blinder).

I disagree , DJ was a far better blocker and has some ability at TE .. do not get me wrong I like WJ too ..I believe because both bring you pos flexibility to be the 3rd TE if need be it just makes better sense to have them both on the roster than it does a guy like Pope and when filling out the balance of a 53 man roster you must consider pos flexibility as well as what kind of money it will take to have them on the roster ... you get both WJ and DJ for about 1 million a year COMBINED salaries ... those numbers are hard to ignore IMO

will j. does what DJ can do and more. paulson has made DJ expendable. i don't think foote does near enough to come back. we need to find a new guy with timmons and spence.

nobody has touched on woodley yet. thats alot of money for a guy that can't stay on the field. worilds can do what he does if there is a healthy JH on the other side.

    ike is still playing well.

lewis has earned a payday and it may not be that cheap.

we should also think now about extending pouncey.

i would not bring max back as the swing tackle. he can't play the right side and can barely play the left side. he has to be able to run block on the right side, something he can't do very well on either side.

colon is not worth near what he is getting. youth movement on the line if you ask me.

put some trade talks out there for some of these guys. see what they say.

see what your missing is Paulson is the #2 TE we always carry 3 Pope is the 3rd right now .. with DJ and WJ we would not have a need to carry a 3rd TE because they both can play it if need be and that also gives you 2 FBs if one gets gimpy ....

I want Max back because he is still our Best LT on the roster irregardless of Adams and Gilbert ....

Colon is playing very well at LG but he is a liability in the health department his salary is not the issue it is his cap hit ( which is prorated from the signing bonus he got with the new deal and is irrecoverable ) so unless you're willing to have a bunch of dead money on the books you are stuck with him and we can ill afford dead money considering we are already in cap hell and only have 35 of 53 under contract for 2013 ...

it is hard to look at the small picture without taking a bigger look at the big picture , it is easy to say release this guy that guy and this other guy because they make to much you also have to look at what it costs you to get rid of them and then pay a guy to take his place .... sometimes its a lot cheaper to keep the over paid guy ..

its good people are at the very least looking and thinking about this though , lots of changes are coming one way or another ...because they have to

This is why Omar Kahn is so great, Great post, Del use to be
our capologist for this board. he started his own gig/blog he kept
us informed of salary situations/implications. You have to be informed
to talk intelligent thanks for the salary cap figures.

$13m for Woodley, what a crime, especially when you see he makes $8.5m more than Clark. I prefer the days when we let our guys walk and the next man up. Get rid of him, Worilds is better

Great thread. You've done a nice job, BUT, and this is a big but, there isn't enough money in the world to make me agree with any part of this sentence. DJ is horrible and should be removed from the roster immediately. Other than that welcome to the board!! :)

no i do understand the cap and dead money. we have another bad guard we are still paying this year because the front office panicked and signed the guy to to much money. kemoeatu. we would still dump alot of colons base salary and from what i have read the timing of it would be crucial. they would have to cut him by certain dates to save the most money.

he is also not playing VERY WELL as you say. he is slow and it hurts our run game to the outsides. he can't get there before the back. he is slow off the ball and a quicker defender beats him in the gaps ( thats why his best move is the bear hug takedown), he is very slow in mind and footwork to pick up switch offs in pass protection, and double teams. trust me i watch the o-line more than probably anyone. it's my passion i guess you would say. not just the good plays the replay. i watch them on the average and not so good plays or even when they are away from the ball. of course thats what i do, so it comes pretty easy to pick up on some of these things.

max, same way. he's bad most of the time. again slow feet. no killer instinct in max. his legnth helps him in pass protect because of his slow feet though just barely. just because he's the best we have, it doesn't mean this is where we should be if we plan on being a successful team. we were on the hook for max's dead money anyway this year. 2 mil.. he was a good sign because of that, but this offense needs far better to make it work. my trouble with max as a backup stems from his run blocking. if he would have to play on the right side our run game would decline a whole lot.

yea i know these two get credit by the tv announcers for a play here and there and most people then believe it's always like that, or colon humping a guy on the ground after the whistle, but those are few and far between.

don't get me wrong they make some plays once in awhile, when they are in just the right situations. if colon can get on a guy head on and gets in position just right, he's a strong boy. he can then move a guy. this is why we lead the league in runs up the middle. by an astounding margin too, because they can't do it on the move and a guy won't allow colon the time to stay head on him and adjust his feet and then drive him. there are so many things i could go into, but hey thats your opinion, and i respect that. i'm just giving you my take on these guys and the reasons.

i'm looking for a youth movement on this line. i would love to see DD and pouncey or a pouncey type player at the other guard. a rock in the middle that is also mobile and some good solid tackle play in all phases of the game. i still think adams should play RT and we get a stud LT finally. gilbert would be the swing guy but i've never been sold on him either. soft. i'd consider trading him, but thats me.

paulson can play the role of H/back too. i think the versatility of will j. to play FB, te, runningback, with wr knowledge and hands from his time at wvu. he also saves a roster spot for them without DJ. they also bought DJ out. i noticed he's off our IR chart. keeping only 4 wr's has bit them. adding the FB took another roster spot. they also tried to save a spot by going with 6 O-linemen and it nearly bit them early this year. i think the roster spot is worth more then what DJ brings them in play and what his ceiling was.

sorry i've rambled so much, but i like the topic.

you can in specific time frames dump base money with a release but you can not dump the prorated portion of a signing bonus , those funds get escalated and increase a cap hit for a shorter time frame but the hit is harder ....

Colon is passing the eyeball test not sure what else I can say we just disagree .....

Max is the best we have at LT until there is a greater commodity on the roster to replace him I want to keep him , sure his feet are slow but he keeps Ben rather clean and that is the top priority for me ....

I am all for improving the 0-Line but to do so you have to have the draft picks to do it or get mighly lucky in the later rounds , we have to many dire needs to spend more high end picks on either line IMO ( ILB , S to be specific )

not saying Paulson can not play H Back too but if you go BIG 2 TE and FB you have to have the personnel to do so if Paulson your number 2 TE is forced into FB duties you just lost an important short yardage formation keeping 2 FB/TE hybrids and 2 TE's for me makes way more sense than 1 FB 3 TE when you only ever field 2 TE at a time anyways , my way you have built in depth at 2 spots without short handing yourself anywhere

no you did not ramble to much you where just explaining your logic as I have mine /cheers

he is probably better at it than me , I dabble with it , and use the pure numbers but honestly anyone can get the information it is all over the place if you take the time to look for it ...

the toughest part is to be able to not only look at the numbers but the roster implications and I pity guys Like Omar Kahn ( he is good but I would not want that job )

every player in the league can be looked at from 100 different perspectives in relationship to the cap and on field performance , the numbers do not lie but they do not always tell the entire story ....

its easy to say this guy makes to much lets release him , then he costs you many times as much or more because you not only have what is left of his signing bonus to cover in quick fashion instead of over the next 3 years but you also have his replacement cost ... sometimes it is just smarter to continue to over pay for a few years and move on

Perfect example is Rolando McClain....it will cost the Raiders $500,000 more to get rid of him than to keep him....but its not only that $500,000 but also whatever the replacement costs on your final 53.

They have to ask themselves is it worth it to pay more for the subtraction to the locker room

    exactly !

also if your team is cap strapped like the Steelers you may not be able to afford to cut someone because of the replacement cost without cutting a few guys that do not carry a big hit for letting them go but saves you in pure salary numbers .. you get into those situation and the whole dynamic of your team could change by being so blinded by the trees your unable to see the forest

dwins , is it still true that we can spread the signing bonus over two years like before? i know there is a released before date and released after date that saves money or costs money in alot of situations. another thing is we had around 9.5 mil. in dead money last year. how much of that do we have paid off, of that money that is charged towards our cap?

there is also the rule that teams have to spend a certain percentage of the cap, so it does kind of put everyone back on a similar level in spending. there were teams that were way under the cap, now they have to spend it.
