So they call that a fumble in the NO/ATL game but we don't get the obvious fumble in last weeks game

If the coach had not used all his time outs we could have challenged

The one thing about the fumble in the Steeler game was that (as we have seen this year) the refs are tending to error on the side of calling those type of plays a fumble and then it is an automatic review due to being a turnover. I cannot understand why in that scenario they would not error on the side of calling it a fumble. (I did not see the game last night to know the other one to which you are referencing)

Exactly. The problem wasnt that the refs got it wrong..they get stuff wrong all the time. We burned through out TO's at an alarming rate and had none left to challenge. If we had had only ONE left, we get the ball back.

Time to get rid of these replacement refs and get the true pros back on the field!!

I was watching the Steelers/Browns game muted at a Buffalo Wild Wings (great football setup. Food -- not so much). However, I saw the lead official point to forward progress being stopped as the ball came out (which I agree was a crap call and in any other game that day, it would have been ruled a fumble in real time). If that was the ruling, how do you challenge it? They didn't say his knee was down, they said progress was stopped. That's a subjective assessment, so I don't see how a review could overturn it, but was it actually discussed in the game?

I believe Tomlin did the right thing by using all 3 timeouts when he did. If I recall correctly, it got us the ball back around the 25 with about 2:45 seconds to go, plus the 2 minute warning, so in essence, 2:45 with one timeout. If we save a timeout we likely get the ball back right at the 2:00 warning - so in essence, 2:00 with one timeout. Seeing as though our offense had struggled (understatement) to move the ball, he wanted to leave as much time as possible for the offense to try to go 75 yards and win the game and I think it was the right call.

Obviously it sucks that we were left without a timeout and couldn't challenge the fumble. But the fault, as others have said, is with the officials who ruled it not a fumble on the field, not with the way we used our TO's.

I agree. After all, there is no way of knowing that a dodgy call is going to come - that's the whole "minigame" of challenges, and why I hated them when they first came in - but you have to play situational football with the info you have at the time. Looking back in hindsight and saying "we should have had more timeouts left" isn't helpful.

I thought this would be referring to Brees' arm being hit and going forward without complete control of the ball...it was called an incomplete pass, for us it was a fumble returned for a TD against the Giants. Anyone else see this play last night?

Just a couple of notes about the fumble play in the Steeler game.

    1. I think Tomlin had no choice but to use the timeouts when he did. It was our best chance of actually winning that game.
    2. If we hadn't fumbled 6 times ourselves in the game, it would have made this less painful.
    3. If the play had happened AFTER the 2 minute warning it would have been automatically challenged by the booth.

The "play happening prior to the 2 minute warning" rule is just dumb on a potential challenge situation. With the play allowing the clock to get to the 2 minute warning on this play, the booth should have reviewed and made things right. I get so fed up with the...but that isn't reviewable nonsense. It frustrates me to no end. Houston won on Thanksgiving day because of it. That play has to be reviewed, I don't care if the coach through a flag or not, you have no choice but to look at that play.

Here is my point, the reason Instant Replay was put into place was so that calls like this, which were called wrong at the time, weren't allowed to affect the outcome of a game. Yet, last weekend alone 1 team flat out lost because of a bad call, and another (us) could have had the ball back with time left for our pathetic offense to attempt to score. I am not saying we would have won, only that we would have had a shot. The goal is....to get the call right. The plays BOTH should have been reviewed.

dude the game was over by the time the Browns fumbled...I'm not convinced the Steelers would have scored enough points to win in the game no matter what the situation.
