Tomlin said Dwyer will start and get the majority of the carries so I would say Mendy has been benched.

He's also apparently been moved to 3rd on the depth chart. #doghouse?

Hope that's a sign that Mendy will be gone next year.

Yes, he's not as bad as some (me included at times) see him, but he's most definitely not so good that he can't be replaced by a decent #2 draft pick

    And it'll save cap space

The Wallace and Mendy demotions wreak of a move in order to prepare for next year. The FO apparently doesn't believe either will be back. Saunders is going to get a chance to prove they don't need to get someone else. My guess is we will look for a #4 receiver on the UFA market. It would not surprise me if we look at Bowe, he is exactly the kind of guy this team currently lacks.

At RB, Dwyer again is going to get a heavy dose of carries, this is his shot to prove he should both be resigned AND start next year. We will not go into next year with only Rainey on the roster, so that position is going to see some turnover for sure.

there was a time when people thought Sanders was going to be better than AB. Sanders did nothing to discredit himself as being a very good wr, AB just took that next step and became the best wr on the team.

Wallace is the 4th best receiver on the team if you count Miller. Wallace is a very good #4 guy. im sure most teams would love to have a number 4 like him, but Tomlin needs to treat him like a #4 and not a #1 anymore which maybe he is.

Wasn't Mendenhall the rookie who was made to carry around a football everywhere in training camp while the other guys were told to try to knock it away from him till he learned how to take care of the ball? Guess by now there's no excuse not to have learned that.

I'm sure the guys on the team weren't hitting Mendy like defenders were.

I think anyone that fumbles the ball should be benched. If Tomlin adopts my rule, Wallace will never have to worry. Bc he cant catch the frigging ball to begin with.:rant:

I don't know about Mendenhall, but I think Adriane Peterson was made to do this everywhere for awhile his rookie year when he was all fumbly.

Whether people on this board want to admit it, or not, Mendenhall and Wallace are the only two players, at their positions, who have proven the big-play ability to put up the points everyone says they want to see (props to AB, whom I like, but he's not putting up TDs like Wallace). Mendenhall can carry the team when Ben is out, and has proven this. Wallace has steadily been a TD leader. This year, Wallace is only tied with Miller for TDs, and that's only because the QBs (all of them) can't seem to get Wallace the ball when he takes the top off the opposing D (This has happened in about the last 5 games, or so).

Wallace is even good at taking 5-10 yard slants 60+ yards for a TD. How's that for YAC? You have to run the slant route well to get the separation from the DB covering you to gain YAC.

Mendenhall... given the LOS will give you 4+ yards/carry, easy. Dump to him in the flat... he'll be one on one with a CB or LB... 7 yards.

If you want to see the Steelers run up the score, then send the offense through Mendenhall, Miller and Wallace.

I believe an injury kept Sanders from getting field time to prove himself. Meanwhile Wallace and Brown were doing their thing, on the field. Sanders is probably just as good as Brown. We just need more time to see it. With Brown injured we're getting a good look at what Sanders can do. So far, it seems we get the same effect. I like Sanders being targeted when a 3rd down conversion is needed. And Wallace still draws attention away from him just as he does for Brown. Now, the QB just needs to get it to Wallace when he takes the top off the D, and you can add 7-14 points to what the offense can deliver, per game.

Just went to check... in 2011, the Steelers had 36 total TDs.

    8 belonged to Wallace.

9 belonged to Mendenhall (and Mendy went out before finishing the season with an ACL).

TDs add to 35, so there must have been a fumble returned for TD? There are no Pick-6s listed.

Either way... 17/36 TDs by Mendenhall/Wallace. That's almost half.

Wallace has 198 YAC, Miller has 194, Sanders has 145 and heck even Redman has 152, oh yeah AB has 259 in 2 less games.

Wallace has 21 catches for 1st downs, Sanders has 25, AB 28 and Miller 32.

Wallace does have the big play ability, but he doesnt do it very often. he makes very little effort to make a play on a ball that isnt thrown perfect and he has dropped a ton of easy catches this year. its hard to take that slant pass very far if you cant catch it.

as for Mendenhall, he is a good rb, but he dances to much to be effective consistanly behind this oline. Dwyer and Redman both run hard and usually have big runs because they keep their legs moving. Mendy doesnt do that.

there was a time when some people around here thought that without Wallace AB, Sanders and Miller wouldnt be as good. well i think we are seeing that it AB that opens things up for the other guys or atleast for Wallace.

Yep. And Wallace has 6 TDs to AB's 1 TD. Look at my stats from my previous post. Last year, Wallace clocked 8 TDs to AB's 3 TDs (and one was punt return). Wallace draws double teams. I don't know if AB every draws double team, but if he does I doubt it's been as much as Wallace.

I've addressed the "dancing" comments about Mendenhall, before. He did most of his running behind a O-Line that didn't block as well as what Dwyer and Redman have received. Mendenhall was practically grabbing the hand-off away from a defender, more often than was necessary and still put up 9 TDs, in 2011. All that dancing is how he kept from losing so much yardage. In the same situations we see Dwyer and Redman go down, in the backfield.

But I can see we will have to agree to disagree.

I actually want to see the Steelers keep all of Young Money, Mendenhall and Dwyer/Redman. I just believe Wallace and Mendenhall have the ability to provide big plays on a grander scale than the others.
