Mike Tomlin has repeatedly emphasized the importance of not living in our fears. However, thinking about it, isn't our offensive philosophy exactly THAT -- living in our fears?

We hardly throw the ball to the middle of the field or down the field and instead rely on short 2-5 yard routes to the edges of the field. We do this not because we don't have the receiving talent (look at our impressive stable of offensive weapons --- Johnson, Claypool, Pickens, Friermuth, Harris), not because we have a burned out 40 year old QB with a pop gun arm (we have a former 2nd overall pick who is 28 years, known for having a rocket arm), but because we are FEARFUL of what might happen if we throw the ball past the sticks!

We are afraid that if we throw the ball vertically rather than laterally an interception might happen! What else could be a possible explanation why our QBs this season and last had yards per attempt well under 10 yards! We are essentially a horizontal team...we only throw and run to the sidelines! What a dream for opposing defensive coordinators!

On 3rd and 8, we call a series of 5 yard routes and hope that Najee or Claypool or whoever, can catch the ball short of the sticks and do a double backflip over two defenders to pick up the first down.

We'd rather get the completion and get tackled short of the sticks than throw past the sticks and risk an interception or incompletion.

Tomlin needs to look in the mirror and perhaps his OC's mirror and ask why he's living in his fears.

Time for you to go watch some all 22 and learn what defenses are doing. Single high safety playing centerfield = mof closed. We also don’t just run 2-5yd routes. Trubisky has been taking a lot of the check downs instead of hitting open receivers deeper down the field.

it would be nice to see the playbook opened up a bit, but that actually requires putting drives together. Keep going three and out and limits what you do.

I agree. This team plays way too conservative and cautiously. Tonight should be go back to sandlot football and see what happens. Can't be any worse for this atrocious offense!

Trubisky has had open looks downfield. He just seems too afraid to make a mistake. At some point he’s just got to start making quick decisions and slinging it or he’ll be gone for Pickett.

Anticipation and accuracy and quick decision making is vital in the NFL.
