Right around Thanksgiving and Christmas he will get a carry or two in the game just to remind the world that family matters. Other than that he will be an offensive sideline observer who makes a boat load of money on ST's.

    It’s neither nepotism or favoritism.

If they didn’t believe these players were worthy of a roster spot they wouldn’t be here. There’s only 53 of these spots available, they aren’t wasting them to placate teammates. Come on man.

Not sure why this situation exists but having two sets of brothers on the same team will have people making accusations. Not sure this has ever happened before on an NFL team before. Could it be what the OP says it is? Sure, why not? Could it be neither like you say? Sure, as well. This is one of those things no one will ever really know either way and it just makes for more posts to read and not really get anything out of it. JMO>

I don’t believe it for several reasons.

One: TJ knows this is a business and isn’t going to hold the Steelers hostage to keep his brother around.
Two: Connor is actually pretty good and its less likely that Cam would force the Steelers hands than TJ.
Three: can’t be wasting roster spots on guys you don’t think can help the team. This is the big leagues.
Four: Steelers always carry a full back even when they don’t ever use one. Who knows why, maybe Ben didn’t like using them. We’ll see if anything changes this season.

Maybe it’s not. But I think a case could be made that their surnames certainly didn’t hurt their chances. Watt is paid a lot money for a player who rarely sees the field and whose primary contribution comes on special teams. And do you really think Heyward is appreciably better than Rader? Maybe he’ll develop into a fine player, time will tell. He’s a hybrid type and those players typically have a relatively short shelf life.

At any rate, I just asked the question. I’m not upset about either player being on the 53 and I hope they both are contributors to the team’s success. But it is a fair question.

I think Conner is much better than Radar

Watt was in demand as a FA when he left the Chargers. If the Steelers didn't pay him soneone else would have.

Is not Warrs fault Canada never calls his# You can't even say that its Watts poor performance. He only is in the field for 4 or 5 snaps a season

Sorry, Jack. Didn’t mean to sound like I was bashing your question. I just don’t think at this level that those things are going on.

As far as Radar, yes, I feel Heyward will be much more productive. We’ll see how he does when the games count but I liked the camp he had.

You worded the question as an accusation. I'm not sure how anybody could read that differently. It is a silly accusation, too.

Rader is not good. I'm not sure why people here think he is. The guy is practice squad fodder. That is why he spent most of the last two seasons there.

For whatever reason the last few years Ben really fell in love with the 3WR\1TE\1RB personnel grouping because of the flexibility it offered. The problem with using a FB as part of a formation is that if you don't have a smart OC that can devise plays that make the formation really unpredictable it becomes a huge tell for a defense when the FB is in there. If all he ever does is block it isn't hard to figure out what they are doing. Now if they split them and had both beside the QB or ran a HB fake and pitched to the FB, then a few passes here and there it becomes harder to line up 9 guys in the box and play the run. I hate to say this but if we look at what the Ravens did in Lamar Jackson's MVP season they really worked unpredictability into some predictable formations. 3TE's a FB and RB and that gave them 3 potential runners and if the defense played them and let a TE come across the middle and be open Jackson had a first down throw. I would do something like that to get Watt and Heyward involved and then get Harris in space and Muth streaking to the open part of the field. The defense covers those have Mitch just scramble up the gut and slide.

I hope our OC can figure out how to use the talents these men have, not just these but all our weapons.

You may read the title of the post as an accusation, but the question was not worded as an accusation. The question was just that…a question. I think if we’re honest, many of us have wondered whether or not there is any consideration given to players who just happen to be brothers of two absolute superstars on the team and arguably two of the greatest players in Steelers history. In other words, if everything else is equal do their surnames give them an edge over another player with the same skill set? Again I think the question was fair even though you may think it’s silly.

It's a silly question. There is way too much at stake for these teams to make stupid roster decisions like that.

You are correct in that there is much at stake and if a humanoid devoid of emotion (somebody like Bill Belichick, lol) was making the decision based strictly upon the data presented then I absolutely agree. However, when human beings are making the decision many times emotion and relationship plays a role and interjects itself into the decision making process. That’s why we held onto Ben and Troy (and other star players) about two years longer than we should have. That may or may not be the case here, but it’s a fair question IMHO.

It's also the same reason people hate on certain players over other players....when in reality not much difference in the players.

In his case, I’m very proud of the Steelers organization for taking care of Shazier. But in some cases I believe the Steelers have held on a little too long when the investment doesn’t justify the return. I do understand it, however.

I am also very proud of how they handled Shazier's devastating injury and allowing him to come to the conclusion that professional football is no longer an option for him. To @S.T.D@S.T.D's point this is contrasted to what fans think about how the Tuitt situation was handled as well as the Decastro one as well. Here we are a year later and I don't recall seeing anything about David Decastro looking to finish his career because he is healthy now. Heck pretty sure Tomlin would make him the starter no questions asked if he was ready to go.

Derek Watt is stealing money. He is paid a lot of money and he doesn't do anything. He should be getting paid around the vet min. Too early to tell about Heyward

They held on to Roethlisberger too long because they didn't have a viable replacement. That led them to cling to the hope that they could squeeze one or two more decent seasons out of him.

Any coach or GM holding on to a player who doesn't belong on the roster just because their sibling is a star on the team should be fired immediately. It would be that stupid. You don't have to be Coach Hoodie to know better.

That probably speaks more to the state of the offensive line than anything else.

Shazier wasn't taking up a roster spot.

He’s not stealing anything. The Steelers made that deal. What’s he supposed to do offer to take a pay cut?
