Omg ... we suck, in drafting db's. I thought, that coach, having previous experience ... as db coach. Would help us in that area. Almost, a whole decade and nothing but duds. How about, we just stop drafting db's, and wait to pick up proven fa's from now on.

The only semblance of a Defensive backfield...We had to bring in Steven Nelson, Haden, and Minkah from the outside...

What is the biggest problem ? Drafting? Developing? Or both...

I could say the only " good " DB developed under Tomlins entire tenure was Ike Taylor...And even he had a real problem...

Great cover Guy but, He couldn't catch a cold...

Artie Burns was a big reach in 2016 and was thrown in to the lineup too quickly. By all accounts they wanted William Jackson III that year but the Bengals grabbed him just before the Steelers picked. Jackson turned out to be a good (very good at times) NFL CB and the narrative might be a bit different if the Steelers had gotten him. They desperately needed a corner and took an ill advised flyer on Burns, terrible pick.

At the risk of making excuses for the team most of the top DB’s in the league are first round picks, the chances of finding top talent after that taper off dramatically, the Steelers really haven’t invested that much capital in the position, they have generally been drafting at the end of Rd 1 and all they guys they would want have been gone. Minkah is a good example. Tomlin loved him but he went at #11, Steelers picked at #28, they would have selected him over Edmunds all day long, and when he became available they made sure they got him.

There is no doubt they have made some bad selections like Burns, Edmunds and Davis but virtually every team struggles to draft and develop corners and DB’s. I can’t think of a single team that does it consistently well.

I just googled the top 10 nfl corners and eight of them are first rounders, Alexander, White, Ramsey, Lattimore, Ward, Terrell, Humphrey etc., with the two outliers being Xavien Howard (early second) and JC Jackson (undrafted). Even in the first round the bust rate is huge. It is a position you have to invest a lot of high capital in if you want a good group, or just get lucky.

Ike Taylor was drafted while Cowher was coach.

I like Sutton who is home grown.

But yes, the drafting of CB's has been putrid under Colbert and Tomlin.

Patriots can't draft WRs. Steelers can't draft CBs.

If I remember that right ( my one Brother always watches the Drafts with me ) We have our lil sheets and notes lol...But once we got to the team in front of us, they DIDN'T need a DB and we were so happy because we wanted Jackson...

Then there was a trade... Baltimore moved up! I told my Brother that The Ravens were gonna F*** us, because we both wanted Jackson.

And then they did F*** us, and we were pissed! THEN , They drafted Artie, and we looked at each other and said " wtf is this "... And got pissed again!

What happened to bpa. We, had other positions to fill. You can't tell me that Burns and Edmunds had that high of a grade?!

You would think a DB/defensive coach would be able to coach one up to be solid? This is all the proof you need to know Tomlin isn’t a good X O coach. He’s good at motivating men, that’s it. Just like how I know Belicheat is a cheater. He can’t evaluate and draft good players but I’m suppose to believe he takes mid players and turns them into Champions? Doesn’t add up.

The only somewhat solid corner we drafted was Keenan Lewis. Who left because he didn’t like Tomlin. Cortez Allen was Tomlins guy and stole like 20 million from the Steelers for like 3 games. He was brutal.

Steelers will have to get their CBs from other teams like they did with Haden.

lets be real though the main busts were 1-3 imo.

    Burns -1
    Golson-2
    Layne/Sutton/Brown -3

Golson biggest CB bust of all time lmao - 3 straight training camp season ending injuries.

Yeah Sutton is the only good pick on that list. The rest is bad. We haven’t done much better at safety (although we’ve spent a lot left capital at that position). Davis was rough. Edmunds is a good player, his game just didn’t translate like they thought. He never had the ball skills necessary to be a difference maker, but he’s a sound player that will continue to start in this league. Hard to classify him as a bust imo. It’s just disappointing they passed on Jesse Bates for Edmunds. Bad assessment.

Injuries derailed his career. Poor guy. Never got to see if he was good or not. Brown and Layne were both pretty disappointing. Burns sucked. Sutton is the only one on that list who panned out to be a good NFL player

I know they didn’t draft him but they developed a very good DB in Hilton, he is one of the best slot defenders in the league. They really should have tried to keep him but they brought Juju, Ben and others back instead.
