I think it is fair to say that Diontae Johnson values being a Steeler more than he does cashing in. I like the comment Blast posted about the grass not being greener.

Dulac has really become a staple of misinformation over the last couple of seasons. Either he needs better sources, or he needs to stop guessing. It is getting to the point where I don't take anything he says seriously.

I'm not sure he will be high production either. I think he will consistently put up Heath like numbers or better. That isn't high production, but he will still be a great TE.

I am not sure our offense will be high production anytime soon. Hoping for at least average.

Technically yes but it’s unlikely he plays the final year of the deal. I’ll bet it’s set up so that most of the guarantees are paid out this year and next. I am sure both sides understand that it’s a two year deal (including 2022) with a year at the end for salary cap purposes and to give the team a little leverage if they want to extend him again.

it still averages out to 3 years at 13 mil. whether it's dead money at that point or not, he's under contract for 3 years. they could franchise tag him in year 4, but by then we should have drafted or have had to pay someone else as well. he's 26 now, 3 years he's 29 going on 30 years old at that point. we may be working on pickens extension at that point.

Yes exactly. This is a good deal for the Steelers IMO, they know what they will get from Diontae and they have given themselves time to figure out if Pickens or even Claypool are worthy of a big extension.

At the end of 2023 they will be back to where they were with Diontae before this deal. No pro-bowl level player will play out the final year of their deal without looking for a re-up. Let’s hope he balls out in the meantime.

    Seems pretty friendly.
22 - $7.6mil: Steelers take a beating on cutting him.
23 - $13.8mil: Steelers take a beating on cutting him.
24 - $18.5mil: No Guaranteed $$ and could save $12.7 mil if cut.

He did inspire at camp, make a heck of a grab and had some other nice ones.
Either way, he's got this season and next and he'll be 27 entering it. Some WR's start sliding, others are good for a few more.

This is where I would turn on DJ. I have no problem with players on their rookie deal wanting more money and staging a Hold-In, but this will be a contract that he has fully approved and negotiated, so I would not be happy with him trying to hold out his final year of this extension.

It would be the Steelers who would be wanting to renegotiate with DJ his final year to prevent him from hitting the open market and not simply DJ wanting more money.

Like I said earlier I think the 2 year extension was a great move on DJs part as he will still be under 30 when his next contract comes up.

I was just stating a reality. It’s hard for players to fully hold out now because of the new CBA so they are using more underhanded tactics to generate drama and try to force the teams hand.

Ideally Diontae hits a new level of play and both sides want a new deal down the road.

wow you won't give up will you? do the math. it's right there in front of you. 13 mil. plus change per year. pretty simple to understand. averages out to 13 per season. not anywhere near the 18-20 the others got. good deal for everyone it looks like.

I'm sure they have a wink wink deal after the 2023 season, if he balls out he will get a new deal before the 2024 season.

I disagree with you here. DJ took less than his worth to stay here. To me that says two things. One, he wants to be a Steeler. Two, he wants to prove he is worth being paid as a top ten receiver.

If DJ balls out, the Steelers need to extend him after 2023. DJ was more than reasonable with the Steelers. If he keeps putting huge numbers over the next couple of years, the Steelers need to return the favor.

isn't that what they have him the raise for already? It wasn't to be mediocre for the next 3 years to wait for 2023 and a bigger deal. By that time you will be paying other guys too. Najee, pickens, austin, moore, possibly others.

I am with @steelersrule6 on this one. I believe there is a "wink wink" aspect to this. This is a bridge deal. DJ had far outplayed his rookie contract. He wasn't going to play for under 3 million this season. The Steelers want to keep DJ, but weren't yet convinced he was worth a huge contract. The two year extension is a compromise. If DJ puts up another season with elite numbers I believe the Steelers will rework his contract sooner than later. And they should.

they have never been real big on 3rd contracts. they have so many one and two year deals going on now that i just don't see that happening. his biggest payday of this contract comes in year 3 of this deal. would he let that money go by holding out? they can tag him in his 4th year if he's wanting to leave. and a 5th. i don't see it. why would they?

With these QBs going to be very tough for DJ to put up “elite” numbers

I still don’t think most people grasp how poor this QB room really is.

You may be right about the QB room. I think DJ is the type of guy that can put up good numbers with any QB, just because he is such a complete receiver.

You keep saying " elite " numbers and " huge " numbers...He hasn't had either ... He's been good to " borderline" very good...but not elite, or huge

As long as they are better than Miller, Graham, Vick, Martin, St. Pierre, Dixon, Blackledge, and Tomczak it can't be that bad.
