Is there a rift between Tomlin and Batch?

I agree that some players just because the were good players doesn't mean they'll make good coaches. It seems that people think that some of the players we currently have or have cut this year need to be made coaches right now on this team. My point is it simply doesn't work like that in most all cases. Just look at a couple coaches mentioned in this thread: Carnell Lake and Kevin Greene. I'll add in Darren Perry and Greg Llyod and Jerry Osalsky(spelling) All these guys that have just started coaching recently have not played in ten plus years. It takes time to work up the ladder.

It seems rare that the truly great players become great coaches. Having said that, Hines is probably unlikely, plus he has a good TV personality so he can be successful there. With Charlie, he's had so many "mental reps" that he may well become a coach, if that is something he is interested in.

Lefty should of been pulled that last game. Ridiculous bad management on that one.

Got a call like I see it, sorry.

(2nd time posting since the update. Took me a while to get in here to do so.)

Batch has been in the league for so long because he knows the game. Batch has never had the strongest arm or the best mobilitybut he knows the game so he gets by. I'm not saying a coach I'm saying a consultant. Ben has been coming off the field to him for his entire career and I don't see why you change that. If batch makes him comfortable and Ben's comfortable taking advice from him then why remove him esp if you can do it and not waste a coaching spot. I do think batchwould make a good coach in the future as well.

No, and I don't know where this angle is coming from. Batch simply is not as good as Leftwich. He's old, slow and has diminishing skills across the board. I don't think Batch could have beat the likes of Baltimore & San Francisco.

But I do expect him to beat Cleveland. Go Charlie!

The Batch as coach discussion has been going on for the last few years, and not just among Steelers fans. Other players, coaches, and sports reporters have consistently talked about it on and off, and other Steelers call him coach on the field. He practices with the young, new players to help them get used to the program, and Haley has pretty much recognized Charlie's coaching tendencies in the media. I don't know about all the other conversations about players who might be good coaches, but this one isn't new.

As for Charlie's age, it may or may not be a factor. Remember, Peyton Manning is 36, Tom Brady is 35, Matt Hasselbeck is 37, and Favre played until he was 40 or 41 (I can't remember the exact age). Batch may not be the same caliber as those guys, but they all show that age can be overcome.
