Going with 3 QBs, 2 of which have a certain brittle-ness, and 4 WRs, was always a risky move. I agree, mac, there should have been some forward planning here.

Since we have two old guys who can get injured walking to the stadium, all the more reason we should have kept JJ on the PS.

What is it with some of the people around here thinking every older player should be a coach? Tomlin does seem to make a lot of dumb coaching decisions, but I doubt Colbert would be involved in something as silly as what you're suggesting.

he talks to charlie because he doesn't talk to his OC for some reason. he either talks to MT or charlie, why not his qb coach or OC. i've seen this all year. i wonder why this is?

Yeah but I don't see a lot of other QB talking with their OC either  I think us fans make too much of it.

Just because they don't show it on TV, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I think with Manning, the story line is he is always trying to get better, so they always show him looking at pictures. Since the cameras show what's happening on the field most of the time, there is obviously a lot that they don't show.

This just in, Ward is going to take over WR coaching duties, Aaron Smith DL coach, Farrior LB coach, and after the Brown's game Batch will be the QB coach. Did I miss anybody? This should be an easy transition because everyone know' you don't need any training to coach. Troy will probably be coaching the secondary by next year.

    THIS JUST IN
obviously you haven't paid much attention to the rumblings over the past 6 plus years.
There has been quite a bit of disussion of Batch being QB coach since obviously he helped BigBen from the first year on.
I've heard and read PLENTY of times people suggesting Ward being the WR coach seeing how he seeemed to coach up the younger receivers throughout his career.
Batch would be a great help as he has been already, whether it's a coach or consultant. Do you actually see Ben coaching up a younger qb ,because the Steelers will Have to get one sooner than later? Ben has enough going on with his own game let alone be able to explain things to a newbie.

I've seen plenty of discussion about Batch and Ward being coaches, mainly from fans who don't seem to recognise that coaching is different from mentoring.
If there's been stuff discussed from the perspective of coaching expertise, then I'm happy to read those discussions.
I also don't get how there is a tendency to see Batch as a great help for Ben, at the same time that there is a similar tendency to see Ben as unpolished, not coached well enough (BA's fault), and a bad decision-maker. But we're retreading very, very old ground here.

Rumblings from who? This message board? I'm not saying he wouldn't at some point make a good coach, but it seems that when a well liked player retires or gets cut people are calling for them to be a coach. Sorry it doesn't work like that.

I have no idea how good a coach Batch could be, coaching is a gift, you can be the best player in the world but if you don't know how to impart that on to someone then it doesn't mean much. Then there are the players that are just so gifted that they can't teach what they know, they were great simply because they had so much talent. Of course a good player can also be a good coach, I think Lake has done a very good job since he came on board and he had very little coaching experience.

carnell is very intelligent. he was a good student of the game while playing. he went from LB to safety,to corner and made all those transitions very successfully. there is so much more to coaching then just telling a guy how you did it as a player. it's no secret hines taught every young receiver we have had the importance of blocking downfield. of course he was taught that too. it just didn't start with hines. we have been lucky for so many years of having good blocking wr's in pittsburgh. it's a big reason we run the ball as well as we have over the years. not everyone can coach that played. not everyone that wasen't successful as a player was a bad coach. haley is one example of that. tomlin is another.

it still bothers me that kevin greene was part of the packers super bowl run as a coach yuck!!
true there is no way to say if a player would make a good or better coach, but it seems (imo) people feel that Batch could be one. so down the road why not give him a shot? He's shown some sort of capacity at coaching, guiding, teaching, realiabity, towards THE STEELERS. i understand the "HE'S CUT, PICK HIM UP" comment steelerglenn, we all have seen many of dose dings dare ;-)

as far as Ward , there's a possibility there as well, of course he prolly loving his current occupation he has WHO WOULDN'T? maybe when his smile isn't as attractive he can help this organization we all love SOOO DEEPLY.

When I'm at the game, I usually watch what happens on the field, not the sidelines. Since I'm not cross-eyed, I can only watch one at a time. Guess you're just better than me, to be able to see all the action at the same time.

I'm not saying they do, just saying we don't know they don't.
