Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder, rib) is expected to return for the team's Week 13 game against the Baltimore Ravens. According to Real Time Sports :herewego!:

This scares me. How in the world could he be ready with that rib problem? I mean have I mistaken the severity of the situation?

I have no clue how he would be ready. I personally want him back as soon as possible but not if he has a chance of getting hurt worse or really putting his health in jeopardy.

Rib injury.... Yea that's what they said!

I think Ben is ok and i never bought in to that "might be season ending" thing, it might had been best he sat these 2 games of course but if he plays in Ratville then he is ok and now with plenty rest

It's stupid. With how physical these 2 teams play, you're risking the rest of the season or worse. All reports said the same thing, the top rib was dislocated, you don't have to be a genius to figure out how dangerous that is. We almost beat the Ravens with a busted up Leftwich. I would at the very least see how Batch performs this week, if he looks good I'd absolutely play him in the Ravens game.

While he can take all the time he wants. If all parties (Ben, Steelers, Doctors, etc) agree he is cleared/safe/good to go/etc...then I'm fine with it...as I trust in them.

I just don`t understand how it can go from possibly puncturing his aorta, to him being ok if he`s driven into the ground by a 250 lb linebacker, in 3 weeks?!?
I`m no doc, but part of what has been confusing me, is how exactly does a "dislocated" rib, heal, in the 1st place?
Does it just grow back into position?
Most other dislocations(Shoulder, Finger, Toe, etc), need to be manually manipulated back into place.
Without surgery, how does the rib get back where it belongs?
I really just hope the initial reports were overblown. Although I have a hard time believing that.
It`s also gonna definitely open the door for that "Drama Queen" crap talk to flare back up..
I guess the bottom line is, IF he is cleared to play, and not in danger of puncturing his heart, and IF he can still throw well, with the pain, then I will be glad to see him back against the Cravens.
Doesn`t sound to me like he could really take being driven into the ground again, so soon, tho, from all I`ve heard so far.
We`ll just have to see what happens, and cross our fingers that he comes out no worse for wear, IF he plays against them.
    GO STEELERS!!!

I popped a rib out of place once when I was lifting and my chiropractor popped it back in place. Hurt like hell for a week or so.

i know it wasn't the same as Ben's injury but things like this don't necessarily require surgery.

That's what I'm saying! After what we witnessed last week how can they expect people to think they know what they're doing? I don't trust Tomlin for a SECOND to pull Ben if he needs to be pulled! He'll pull that same crap he did in the presser about Lefty and say "that's football". If you remember in the Clowns game when Colt got rocked by James the Clowns got in trouble with the league for not pulling McCoy out. Well how can the league not take a look at what happened to Lefty? I mean the whole world could see that he was hurt but Tomlin said he wasn't eve "CLOSE" to puttin Charlie in there! I understand that it might be easier to diagnose a concussion but still you gotta believe that they KNEW Lefty was hurt but just turned a blind eye to it. The only conclusion I can draw is that Ben's injury was overblown or misreported and it's NOT life threatening. That HAS to be what it is. Surely UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES would they let him play if his life was in danger. They won't let Ryan Clark play in Denver. So I just HAVE to believe they just didn't accurately report the severity of the situation.

It really freaked me out when it happened. I was doing my last rep of my last set of leg presses and was struggling a little. I tried to give it an extra little push and twisted my back a little and pop! It sent a shock up to my neck and I just froze. The guy I was lifting with helped me get the weight racked and locked in and I just sat there in the machine for a few minutes to try to figure out what the hell I did.

I got up and felt a sharp pain, like I got stabbed. I went to the chiropractor the next day and she popped it back in place and I felt the same pop and shock up to my neck. The doctor told me that I would be more susceptible to it since it happened... Knock on wood no problems since then.

And, you don`t have big, nasty linebackers, trying to shove you thru the ground, since then... But, you are still "more susceptible" to re-injuring it.
Not trying to pick on ya, or anything, really. That sounds incredibly painful, and I wouldn`t wanna go thru it.
I`m just sayin, How can they give Ben the green light to go out and play, given his current "work environment"... esp against the Cravens, who play us like it`s a war every game, anyhow...
Do you think they won`t have a huge "target" painted on Ben`s ribs???!!!
They would never admit to having a "bounty" out, nowadays, but they did before the whole New Orleans fiasco, and you just KNOW that defense will be trying to turn Ben into tenderized meat, if we put him on the field...
I still agree that he gives us our best chance to win.
I just don`t wanna see him try to play "hero", like San Fran, last year, and wind up hurting himself, or our team worse...
We may not have many choices a fter Batch plays Sunday, but I am hoping like hell he survives that game, to AT LEAST be Ben`s backup against the Craveens...
    On a side note...
I HATE this deal, where the league has been scheduling divisional opponents to play each other 2 weeks apart, the last couple seasons... That`s just WRONG!!!
I said it last year when Cleve had to end their season by playing us, and the Ratbirds FOUR times in the last Five weeks!!!
C`mon MAN.... Spread those contests out over the course of the year.
It was wrong then, and it`s wrong now.
    GO STEELERS!

The reason they started doing that is so there would, in theory, be more "meaningful" games at the end of the year instead of wrapping up divisions early and having meaningless games on tv. But in a division like ours it's just pretty dang brutal.

    I get that.
BUT... If the top 2 teams in the division, are handling their business... Getting wins outta the division, as well as within it...
Then those late season games, still determine which team makes the playoffs/wins the division.
Just as much drama, in a week 1 divisional game, as a week 13 one, in other words...
And allows the "ebb and flow" of the season to take place. (injuries, etc)...
No reason that the teams(any teams), should have to play each other 2 weeks apart.
Give `em time after the first game, to establish their records, deal with injuries, maybe get players back, that weren`t available otherwise...etc... see what I`m sayin?
And this is NOT just because we might have to play the Cravens without Ben, after they hurt him...
This is more fair, across the board.
I just see NO reason why ANY N.F.L. team, should have to play another one, 2 weeks after they played them the 1st time, with 32 teams, involved.
*With the exception of playoffs, right after a team played them in the regular season.
I`m just talkin regular season scheduling here... Spread out the divisional games, evenly, throughout the season...
    That`s only fair...

And that is part of the reason I said that I know it isn't the same as Ben's injury.

Good to hear. We need him to help win a division which seems hopeless at this point.

That's what these guys get paid for afterall right? Millions of dollars a year to play a sport they love to play and we love to watch.

Soldiers go to war and get nothing near the amount of money that professionals get to play sports.

And this is war. It's the Ravens ..

I know I’m going to get flamed for saying this but I don’t care. I love Ben just as much as the next fan but the way they made this injury sound was if the guy could die with the right hit if he came back too soon. Coming back against the Rats is too soon. Now that the birth of his child is done he’s coming back against the Rats??? Sounds suspect to me but I could be wrong.

If I recall correctly, the hype over the rib puncturing the aorta came from Ben in a press conference, not from a team official or a doctor, so he may have misunderstood or overexaggerated the risk and severity. I take all injury reports with a huge dose of salt - they are often way off. Just have to wait and see.
