Exactly what I am thinking. Deon at 4???? Aaron Donald is the only current player on the list, and I get it, but so many glaring omissions. Mean Joe should have been a no brainer.

Perfect example of what I said in a different thread about opinions. No Lambert? Green?
I loved Woodson but, I don't rank him above Lott! Of course, what does it matter? We're not "analysts".

Sanders, Donald and Woodson should not be in the top 10. Green should be in the top 5.

Ray Lewis was way too high. Sanders and Woodson over Mel Blount? No Joe Greene?

    Uninformed, meaningless clickbait.

Isn't it a little early for Donald?

What a joke of a list.

Reggie White #1? He’s great no doubt, but just another guy that gets elevated to legendary status after he dies.

Reggie White belongs on the list, but I agree. I am not sure I see him as #1.

Honestly Lott should get some consideration at #1. He was that good.

Night Train Lane and Mel Blount are two very notable omissions for me. I get that both were way before my time but without them, modern NFL Football may not be as it is currently. Have no issue with Aaron Donald on the list though for I believe he is worhty of the consideration. Where he is place though is of a different manner.

Being a three time DPOY is one aspect. Having that Super Bowl Ring is another aspect in it of itself. J.J. Watt does have three DPOYs himself... but no ring. Even if he did have it; J.J. Watt sadly peaked too soon. Aaron Donald is still going strong; a 7x First Team All Pro since 2015 and has shown no signs of slowing down.

Overall, recency bias among other aspects beget lists like these. Just something to talk about. Nothing more.

Where is Dick "Night Train " Lane on the list? Woodson is arguably the 4th or 5th best Steelers defensive player after Greene, Lambert, Blount, and Ham.

Here's my attempt at a list. All Time Defense is tough. So many names to choose from.

    1. Lawrence Taylor
    2. Ronnie Lott
    3. Mean Joe Greene
    4. Reggie White
    5. Deacon Jones
    6. Rod Woodson
    7. Bruce Smith
    8. Ray Lewis
    9. Mel Blount
    10. Dick Butkus **edited was Junior Seau**

Ed Reed probably deserves to be on this list. Polomalu also deserves consideration. AQL mentioned Night Train Lane. I'm sure he belongs as well, but was also well before my time. A list like this will no doubt be different depending on how old the person is making the list.

I agree, but looking at the numbers a little bit, it's hard to keep him off the list. Of course, not everybody gets to compile stats over 20 years.

As some of us said recently in the quarterback discussions, you can't list guys from different eras together. The games they each played WERE NOT THE SAME!!!

That point cannot be overstated, iterated enough, or ever debunked. PERIOD!!!

That said, and as I've also stated before, Mel Blount is the best defensive player, regardless of position, who I ever saw play. But I still wouldn't make a list with him and others outside of his era. So for his era, he's at the top for me. All of those guys in the list above would definitely be in the top 10 of their eras, with the possible exception of Sanders (he'd be at or near the bottom of his era's top 10 at best). That is how widely out of whack the entirety of opinions of him are, from one extreme to the other - possibly the most of any player ever.

I vehemently hate these lists. I don't see how anyone can objectively compare players from different eras that even played the same position, let alone those that played different positions. Give me top 5s of all 11 spots in no order, and even that subjective to a degree. It's off-season fodder and nada else to talk about this time of the year.
