we are signing and drafting a lot of wide receivers. just added a slot receiver as a tryout guy. an UDFA. plus boykin. drafted two top guys. is this a message to DJ that they are not going to pay the type of money he is asking for? is claypool next? DJ didn't go to florida with the rest of the gang and trubisky. he didn't go to volunteer mini camp, which doesn't mean alot or does it? maybe it is claypool but it just seems there is some distancing going on with DJ. maybe it's nothing. what say you?

The WR group was extremely thin, needed to be addressed regardless of Johnsons contract situation.

With the exception of spending a second rd pick on Pickens, it sounds like they are just throwing a bunch of stuff against the wall and seeing what sticks.

Honestly, outside of Austin the rest of the names in the WR room aren’t going to help them. Boykin and Miller are depth at best. If you are looking for those guys to replace Johnson, we are in trouble. Austin has the talent but just not sure he has the size. The best comparison to him is Marquise Brown, if he can give us that, I’d be more than happy with that production out of our number 3 receiver (basing that on next season if DJ moves on).

claypool, pickens, boykin, vaughns, bussey, white all big and fast. miller, olszewski, sims, in the medium range with experience. austin, snead small and fast or quick or both. then add DJ and you think they will pay him those types of millions? i dunno about that. some of these guys may be cut to make room for a couple of new additions but that room has a lot of talent and is pretty full.

In the last 20 season only 3 WRs ever got a 2nd deal from the Steelers.

Hines Ward, AB, and Juju (and Juju was only 1 year)

Steelers love and leave them pretty often.

Guess I wasn’t clear. I don’t know if they will pay DJ or not, I’m saying that Boykin, Vaughn, Bussey, Miller, Sims, Olszewski have nothing to do with it. You honestly think any of those names are expected to take Johnson’s place if they don’t sign him?

Only one that has a shot is Austin.

Mac you fall in love with bottom feeders too often. Most of the guys you mentioned would barely make the final 53 on any team in the league, let alone affect DJ's contract status in anyway.

I never said anything about falling in love with any of these guys. All I know is the Steelers are loading up on a lot of wide receivers. Have you ever seen them have this many in camp at one time? Are they all here to replace just ray ray or juju?

Now as far as so called bottom feeders, we have been over this many times. The Steelers and many NFL teams use these types of players every year. Many become starters and stars. Many of them on this team over the years.

He trains with Routgod in the offseason. I’m sure it cost a lot and is set up in advance.

None of those medium-range guys with experience are actually good NFL receivers. Miller couldn't get on the field last season. Olszewski is a return specialist who might run a gadget play or two if he somehow makes the team, which got a lot harder when they drafted Austin. It is silly to think the UDFA they just signed out of a tryout is a legitimate option to replace Johnson. Blast is right. The only one of those guys who could possibly take Johnson's place is Austin, and even that is a long shot.

Heard an interesting take by a dude on sports talk radio being interviewed by Doug Gottlieb, who's name escapes me. He brought up teams like K.C., Tennessee, and Green Bay letting high profile receivers walk recently yet those teams are perennial winners. He trusts the way those organizations run their rosters. I would lump the Steelers into this category as they have success finding quality receivers through the draft. I guess we'll see what they decide to do with DJ when the time comes but my feeling is they don't break the bank on him.

Qbs allow them 2 do that, and us at one time.
We shall see how that works for Tennessee ....although IMO they got a great Wr in the draft.

i never said any one guy was here to replace DJ, just that they may be sending a message that they will at some point replace him.

claypool, pickens, austin and whomever they keep out of this group or even add to this group seems like a clear message that they aren't going to pay him stupid money.

remember DJ was one of these guys a few years ago. a 4th rounder. DJ isn't going anywhere this year and these guys will be a year older in this offense come next year.

all i said was they are loading up the wr room with a lot of players for a reason. we have never added this much at one time.

i like DJ but he's not worth that kind of money nor do i think he's a true number 1 receiver. that's fine too, i believe teams can get by well with a bunch of good number 2's and 3's if the QB can hit the right guy on any given play. the more weapons the less the need for a number one guy.

make the defense work to find the right coverage. we have big and fast to have to cover and we have small and quick to have to cover. pick your poison. if we offer enough of this which i think they are setting themselves up to do, it will put pressure on defenses. don't forget the guy out of our backfield and the TE we can throw at a defense as well on any given play.

i liked how they have approached this. i don't think they feel he is worth that kind of dough. if he doesn't accept a fair payday we will have options.

Keep in mind they also lost three receivers who got significant playing time in one offseason. How often does that happen?

Seriously, of the guys they added, how many have a real shot to make a significant contribution at receiver? Pickens and Austin could do it. Boykin is a long shot, but possible. Everyone else seems incredibly unlikely.

During this 20 year span the Steelers were already paying the big bucks to Ward and then later AB. They couldn't afford to pay 2nd contract money to additional receivers at the same time. This won't be an issue in 2023.

We've had incredible success drafting receivers over those 20 years but that was under Colbert. We can't assume the next GM will be as good at drafting receivers.

Still, I can't see paying DJ that kind of money when we don't know what kind of chemistry he has with Pickett. We've seen a number of really good receivers leave in free agency only to be average when they didn't have a HOF caliber QB.
