I wonder if Pickens didn’t want his #1 or if the Steelers said he couldn’t. Is Andersons number unofficially retired?

Leal got Big Snacks #, big shoes to fill!

Little Ironhead wearing Heath's number seems out of place. Another set of big shoes to fill.

In my almost 37 years I have never seen anybody but Gary Anderson wear #1.

Hopefully Pickens doesn't pull t he Limas Sweed with the #14

Heyward is a football player, and you can't take the football out of the football player. He will have to find his role as the following.

    #1 Play special teams
#2 Play a reserve role to serve as a TE (3) of shorts on a gameday behind Muth, and Gentry
    #3 Play Fullback as a FB1
#4 Show that you can maybe play as a emergency RB if need be on a gameday.

Basically he has one job unseat Derek Watt, and show the Steelers that Derek Watt isn't worth $3 million a season when you can have Connor Heyward at $600,000.

Cobi Hamilton wore 83, so I think we can stop worry about anybody wearing that number having to fill Miller's shoes.

I don't think they give out #1, but it can't be due to Anderson. He was an excellent kicker, but I can't see them even unofficially retiring a number to honor a kicker.

I thought the only number officially retired was Joe Greene's #75

Also no idea why Heyward went with #83?

I also wish Austin and Pickens had flipped with Pickens with #19 and Austin with #14.

Two. Ernie Stautner #70 and Joe Greene #75. Only fitting that the only NFL team to have all their retired numbers be defensive linemen is the Steelers.

I thought that at first, but his first job in making the team is likely beating out Rader as 3rd TE and of course contributing to sp. Teams. Not saying he might not overtake and supplant Watt in various packages (as little as they use him), As they labeled him TE I believe that is the original plan.

Going to be a tall order as Rader is the best blocking TE on the roster.

Folks the Steelers are always looking for someone younger and cheaper, if talent is equal bye bye Derek Watt.

He played in only six games last season, so there really is no reason to believe he is entrenched in a role on this team. I like Rader. He is a very good blocker and special teamer, but he's nothing special.

True but you want it to be a passing of the torch type of thing. The league and team history make number selections difficult.

Watt is on the last year of his 3 year deal, the savings for cutting him is not quite 2 million with his cap hit being over 4 million. His underutilized two years prior is not going to make him a hot commodity so he is either going to get cut if anyone shows a bit of upside or extended to lower the cap hit and kick that can down the road to September

Heyward is younger and more athletic. Rader has had opportunities to play himself into more snaps as a Steeler and hasn't done it.

The point stands. This idea that Rader is somehow going to be hard to displace makes no sense. The has barely gotten onto the field during two seasons with the Steelers, who just spend draft capital to get Heyward.

Are you saying Heyward is going to be our blocking TE? Heyward needs to put on about 25 lbs to play on the offensive line.

Neither Heyward or Watt belong on the offensive line trying to block a Defensive end.

The one area that both Gentry and Muth need to improve this offseason is how to Chip the DE, before going out on a route.
