My vote is Woodson. He was more well rounded and he supported the run.

    Not close IMO. Woodson.
If I was building a team....I would take both, but if I could only have one....it would have been Woodson....Even though I burned His pro bowl jersey when He went 2 the ravens (wish I didn't now)

    :hmm:

I know of a "Deion" Sanders in the same tier of Rod Woodson. I do not know of this "Dion" though. Never mind that however.

What are we quantifying as "better than" here?! Better cover corner?! Better run stopping?! Better impact play maker?! Quite a list of differences that separate the two in all honesty.

Sanders was better in coverage, Woodson was the better overall CB.

Deion seemed to hate tackling. Rod lived for it. Case closed.

Woodson I always prefer guys who let their play do their talking. Better all round corner better in run support and not afraid of tackling.

Deion was a great talent but too much flash and hype distracted from his poor effort in making tackles. If you ran the ball his way he not much more than a skinny obstacle.

Deion may be the best cover man that ever played. But that's only a fraction of a DB's responsibilities. He sucked at everything else.

Woodson was almost as good a cover man. And he excelled at all facets of the game. It's no contest.

(Mel Blount enters the chat) "Yeah? Either of them have the NFL change the rules because they were too good???"

    Hell...

If Mel Blount is not the GOAT of CBs, Night Train Lane for me is the only other option. Grandfather of all modern CBs. Without him, that position is not nearly as celebrated as it is today.

He's before my time. I remember seeing clips of him on NFL Films a lot when I was young. Those clotheslines, man...

Mel Blount was better than both, but between Woodson and Sanders I picked Woodson.
Woodson would come up and tackle. Dion not so much. Blount, my friends call me suup, that's short for SUPER!

Deion was better at self-promotion by a big margin, and that’s about it. I can’t say that Sanders was that much better in man coverage than Woodson, and as many have said, Woodson was a more complete player.

    Yep.

There is a reason why the face mask was invented. That was due to Night Train literally attempting to rip people's faces off their heads!!

Barry must have been better than Woodson though, because he juked Rod out of his ACL.

I really hate giving Sanders credit for anything. I can't stand the guy.

That said, Sanders was better in man coverage. Nobody had been that good since the Mel Blount Rule was put into place. I'm not sure anyone has been that good since. That said, the gap wasn't large enough to make up for the fact that Woodson was an outstanding run defender, too. He was a physical player, something Sanders just didn't bring to the table.

Funny. There is always one in the group. Thanks for pointing that out. I thought his name looked off when I was typing it. To answer your question we are qualifying best overall CB. Basically when ever I see people say best CB in the NFL a lot of people say Deion. I cringe because that simply is not true. Sure he may have been one of the best cover corners but that does not define all of the other traits or job duties of the cb position. To me Deion was an incomplete cb. IF you can’t tackle and support the run you can not be called the best overall cb. Woodson was absolutely the better overall cb the more well rounded one.

    Funny indeed.

Counterpoint; at what point did I say Deion was better overall than Rod?! I asked a series of questions, none of which have been answered. Context good sir. Context.

I merely asked what are the criteria overall. The question itself has an array of answers. For that matter, merely asking who is better alone is vague as there are, again, too many answers to give here.

    Again, context.

Man, I remember Mel Blount. He was an anchor for years.
    Solid defense all the time.
Played in the Era of Jack Tatum... the Steelers matched the ferocity of the Raiders and beat up guys like Cliff Branch.
As mentioned, a rule was created specifically because of him.

Ron Woodson - Total Defense as well. Safety or Cornerback.

Deion Sanders - I remember the myth: "You don't throw his way" - I remember 2 expansion teams didn't get the memo.
Carolina specifically went at him, ran his way and threw on him.
    Jackson did same.
Sanders had speed, so fly patterns didn't work so well... but timing routes did.
And Sanders was useless against the run.
I'll take Woodson all day over him.

Its a simple question. Best overall CB. That is the general question most people ask when comparing players. You can imply your logic when comparing WR’s or RB’s or whatever position. An example is RB’s one might be better at catching or better at running between the tackles. The question was not meant to be that granular wise guy. Its simple when you compare Woodson and Sanders overall and as an all around CB whom do you think is better? I happen to think Woodson is hands down.

Had you stated such, I would have said Rod myself.

    Fun fact.

I had listed my top five Corners of All Time (since been updated). Rod is above Deion for me.
