The Pats got production out of him because Blount quit on the Steelers, not the Patriots. You're never going to get any production out of a player that quits on your team. They lose all credibility in the locker room and can quickly become an issue for your team moving forward. The organization (coaching staff and GM) lose credibility with the rest of your players every second that guy remains on the roster. You cut him, then whatever he does after that is not your concern. You can't just shake in your boots that a rival will pick him up.

There is hardly a market for back up RB's that just quit on their team the night before. A trade would have been impossible. The only reason the Pats picked him up was because he had played for them the year prior and they were likely the only team that was going to take a chance on him.

there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about your business. Acting like a child that didn’t get their way and storming off is the wrong way. They’re professionals, act like it

A trade for what? The Steelers don’t have any leverage. You’re trying to unload a player because he’s unhappy. Any general manager worth his weight in salt will wait until the player is released.

That's just not true though. He had 71 touches in 11 games in Pittsburgh, which is 6.45 touches a game. If that's all he wanted, he would've been happy since he was getting nearly 7 touches a game.

He was mad that we kept giving the ball to our young star and not him. It was 100% an ego thing. He thought he was worth more than 6.5 touches a game. He might've been right, but he wasn't worth taking Bell out of the game for... so in fact it was just that he was stuck behind someone so much better than him. Instead of trying to come to an agreement with the staff on how he was going to be used, or just sucking it up and touch the ball 6.5 times a game for the rest of the year while you are getting paid, he decided to be a grown ass man throwing a fit. So we cut him.

Its just a fallacy that is propagated by people who have never played organized sports at a high level. Its not a shot at hmmmmm or anyone for that matter... It's just that its hard to know how professional organizations work in real life. This isn't Madden NFL 2014 where you can just ship him to Detroit for a pick and call it a day. No one is offering a pick for a player that walked out on his team mid game. The interested teams are just going to wait until you cut him and then try to sign him after that. They know how NFL locker rooms work, and know that the Steelers weren't going to risk Blount submarining the locker room or their culture. They knew at some point we would just have to cut him. Essentially using our own locker room as leverage.

The locker room and culture is a real thing. Losing the locker room over a particular player happens all the time, and is very difficult for that organization to overcome. They would essentially have to win the trust of their players back and that doesn't happen overnight. Too much risk hanging onto him hoping someone we desired to trade him to would ever give us a phone call on him.

    What specifically am I forgetting?

Also specifically in the 90s, I'm referring to the inability to resign their own players who became free agents ... not going out and signing superstars.

You are correct. The trade deadline was October 28th and Blount pulled his crap November 18th

in addition to that Blount has said publicly he quit because he thought he should have been starting over Bell. Then recently came out again and blamed Haley. Also said it had nothing to do with Tomlin.

Bell rarely made it through a season so there is no arguing Bell needed more rest when possible. Everyone knew it including Blount. People on this board complain about it regularly. There are games in Bells career he had around 40 touches and no other RBs touched the ball.

You won’t get anything yes but he could have been traded for a bag of chips.

You are correct about Blount. However saying Tomlin handled it properly I will never agree with.

All of this crap about Blount and Tomlin ignores one simple irrefutable fact. It’s the General Managers job to hire and fire players.

How cash strapped we were last season and only able to sign bargain bin players. We cleared a lot of money this offseason and we’re able to make some moves in free agency.

As for the 90’s Steelers and free agency I hardly remember the moves they made or didn’t make. I certainly don’t remember how close to the cap we were at the time.

Maybe you are right he is the best coach ever or maybe the Steelers have been in a down path since he got there. The last Cowher player retired. We will see in the next 9 months
