I did find the clutch rap song! I do not like it. Was never into rap metals, except for some RATM songs:

While this maybe true for some....not true for others..

What Mastodon plays now(whether you like it or not) is not mellow....it way harder musically. A lot of what non musicians....or not experience musicians think is harder Is really simple. Why do you think so many drop a D.....so they can play with one finger. They can chord with one finger. We'll really not many play actual chords. It take more than 2 notes to make a chord.
Here is the real test....Mastodon for example can still play what they use 2 , but chose not 2....it's not that they forgot how....they just got better at playing.
Acdc fits your bill....they are either scared 2 death of progressing, or can't. It's why I stopped playing in all Metal bands....I got bored playing stuff I could play blind folded since I was 17. Black Sabbath already did those songs....now people are playing the same way....just farther down tuned, and slower.
Here's a hint the most people can't tell the difference in playing.....I played Divinations on My acoustic guitar....and a room full of people didn't know what it was....asked if I wrote it. I turned around....plugged in My electric....stepped on the Distortion pedal, and played the exact same thing, and they were like.....Yeah...Divinations.....I just smiled.

In fairness, I never listened to the whole new record. Honestly, I couldnt get past the halfway point. I tried. I'll give it another try and report back. See if i can make it to the end this time.

I do have a buddy who likes them as much as you do, and he thought they were trying to sound like Torche a little bit.....who is a good band.....but not really heavy all the time.

More like half of a movie. BUT i really didnt like what i heard to that point.....sometimes stuff grows on you though. A lot of records have taken time to grow on me. But it just didnt grab me like the old stuff. Which I still love.

March of the Fire Ants was the 1st Mastodon song i ever heard....and i was floored! Nothing like it at the time.

Its a 4 song EP. Pretty short. The last song is an Aphex Twins cover. The whole thing is just brilliant.

True. Sometimes it takes a couple of listens. I remember Operation Mindcrime I found it in a cutout bin on vinyl the 1st few days of release and although i liked all Queensryche other stuff it did take a couple of listens then it became heavy rotation on my turntable.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik Flaunt It was another one.

I have a autographed copy of that Operation Mind Crime. I thought it was a great concept album....I met them at a meet ,and greet before a show. They opened for Metallica during the Justice tour in like 1988, or 89.

It is a great album. It could have been because someone bought it returned it that quick and it cost me a dollar that i went into it thinking . Gosh why would they return it maybe it sucks? Damn happy i grabbed it especially for the price.
Yes, saw that Metallica show in Manchester w/Danzig Then with Queensryche at Nassau coliseum on Long island , East Rutherford, Cincinnati, Charlotte, Fayetteville finally met Geoff, Toledo, Knoxville, Memphis. Columbia Sc with The Cult. Geoff did a show at the Ryman when he did all Operation after he left the band that was pretty neat.

They are criminally underrated by far too many people.
